单词 drumbler
释义

drumblern.

Brit. /ˈdrʌmbl̩ə/, /ˈdrʌmblə/, U.S. /ˈdrəmb(ə)lər/
Forms: 1500s–1600s 1800s– drumbler, 1600s drombler, 1600s dromler, 1600s drumblar, 1600s 1900s– drumler.
Origin: A borrowing from Dutch. Etymon: Dutch drommelaer.
Etymology: < Dutch †drommelaer (1583), †drommeler (1599 in Kiliaan; now drommelaar , only historical), apparently a variant or alteration of †drymmelaer kind of cargo vessel (1570; also †dremmelaer (1588), perhaps < dremmelen to linger, dawdle (see note) + -aar -er suffix1, perhaps so called on account of its slow speed, although not enough of the ship's construction is known to confirm or reject this interpretation.Dutch dremmelen ‘to linger, dawdle’ is apparently first attested later than the noun (1633; now only regional (southern) in sense ‘to toddle’); it is itself probably < dremmen to urge, harass (a person) (now drammen ; Middle Dutch dremen , probably ultimately of imitative or expressive origin) + -elen -le suffix 3, although this poses semantic problems. Compare also Middle Dutch drommen to push, press, to force one's way though a crowd (early modern Dutch drommen : see thrum v.1), drommelen , in the same sense (1635), and †drommeler a square-built, stocky person (1599 in Kiliaan), which may all have influenced the form. Sometimes associated with the unrelated dromond n. or its French etymon; compare:1611 R. Cotgrave Dict. French & Eng. Tongues Dromant, a Drumbler, Carauell, or such like small, and swift vessell, vsed by Pyrats. Sense 2 may show a different word; perhaps compare slightly later drumbling adj.2
historical in later use.
