Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly.
Forms: 1500s dromel-, 1500s 1700s– drumble-, 1800s drumle-, 1800s– drummel- (English regional (south-western)).
Origin: Apparently an imitative or expressive formation.
Etymology: Apparently related to drumble n.1 and dumble- comb. form; apparently ultimately of imitative origin. Perhaps compare drumble v.1Attested in a small number of formations from the second half of the 16th cent. onwards, exemplified below.
drumble-dore n. [ < drumble- comb. form + dor n.1; in quot. 1567 apparently with alteration after dromedary n. (compare forms with medial -l- at that entry)] Obsolete a clumsily-flying insect, esp. a bumblebee; (figurative) a sluggish, slow-witted person.
