释义

earletn.

Brit. /ˈɪəlᵻt/, U.S. /ˈɪ(ə)rlət/
Forms: 1600s earlette, 1600s– earlet.
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; partly modelled on a French lexical item, and partly modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: ear n.1, -let suffix.
Etymology: < ear n.1 + -let suffix, partly after French oreillette pendant earring (1505 in Middle French), chamber of the heart (1654), attachment to a church bell (1831 in this sense in the passage translated in quot. 1833 at sense 2d: see oreillet n.), and partly after classical Latin auricula auricle n. In sense 1 perhaps partly also after bracelet n., armlet n., etc. Compare earlier earling n.
