The removal from a wound, etc., of damaged tissue or foreign matter (see also quot. 1842).

1842 R. Dunglison Med. Lexicon (ed. 3) Débridement, the removal of filaments, &c. in a wound or abscess, which prevent the discharge of pus. In a more general acceptation, it means the cutting of a soft, membranous or aponeurotic part, which interferes with the exercise of any organ whatever.
1929 F. A. Pottle Stretchers (1930) 149 Débridement about half the extensor muscles of thigh.
1967 S. Taylor et al. Short Textbk. Surg. xxxii. 473 Where there is..contamination of the wound by dirt and foreign bodies, full débridement must be carried out.
