Etymology: < Dutch adj. + land n.1In sense 1 after German Deutschland Germany (rare before the 16th cent.). On the history of the name see the etymological note at Dutch adj., n.1, and adv. In Middle High German the phrase tiutsches lant (or in plural tiutsche lande ) is more common; compare Middle High German (rare) Diutisklant , although it is possible that this form may reflect editorial decisions about word division. In High Dutchland after German †Hochdeutschland (1526 or earlier as Hochteutschland ). In Low Dutchland after German Niederdeutschland (1526 or earlier as Niderteutschland ), which in early modern German usage included the Netherlands, but in modern current usage is restricted to the Low German-speaking areas of northern Germany. With sense 2 compare Dutch Duitsland, †Duitschland (Middle Dutch Duutsclant, Duytsland, etc.), which in Middle Dutch could refer to either Germany or the Netherlands, but in modern Dutch refers only to Germany.
