单词 american indian
释义

American Indiann.adj.

Brit. /əˌmɛrᵻk(ə)n ˈɪndɪən/, U.S. /əˌmɛr(ə)k(ə)n ˈɪndiən/
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: American n. and adj., Indian adj. and n.
Etymology: < American n. and adj. + Indian adj. and n. Compare earlier Indian n. 2, Indian adj. 2.
A. n.
A member of one of the indigenous peoples of the Americas, esp. one of the peoples indigenous to land in what is now the continental United States; cf. Native American n.The term American Indian has been steadily replaced, esp. in official contexts, by the more recent term Native American. The latter is preferred by some as being a more accurate description (the word Indian recalling Columbus's assumption that, on reaching America, he had reached the east coast of India). American Indian is still widespread in general use, however, partly because it is not normally regarded as offensive by American Indians themselves.
