Etymology: < drove n. + land n.1Earliest attested (in quot. c1500) as a vernacular word in a Latin sentence. Apparently also attested as a field name (a1622 in Portslade, Sussex).
Law. Obsolete (historical in later use).
Land held by a tenant in return for the service of driving the lord's cattle or other livestock to market, pasture, etc.; spec. (in Kent) land held in return for the service of driving the lord's pigs to the Weald of Kent, presumably to feed (cf. droveden n.).
