Etymology: < alluvium n. or its etymon post-classical Latin alluvium + -an suffix, perhaps after French alluvien (1785 (in a translation of R. Kirwan Elem. Mineral., where the English original uses alluvial adj.) or earlier). Compare earlier alluvial adj.Occasional examples where alluvian appears to be a noun are probably better interpreted as errors for alluvion n. or alluvium n.:1794 R. J.
