Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Ealing.
Etymology: < the name of Ealing Studios, Ealing Green, west London.Film production began at Ealing Studios as early as 1902, but it was not until the arrival of Michael Balcon as head of production in 1938 that films were first issued under the Ealing name. Under Balcon's leadership (until 1956) the studios produced the series of classic comedy films for which they are best known, including Passport to Pimlico (1949), Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949), Whisky Galore! (1949), The Lavender Hill Mob (1951), The Man in the White Suit (1951), and The Ladykillers (1955).
attributive. Designating a film made by Ealing Studios in London, esp. (as Ealing comedy) any of a series of comedy films made in the period after the Second World War, typically featuring gentle or whimsical humour, often involving an individual or community prevailing against authority. Also: of or relating to films of this type.
