Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly (i) a borrowing from French. Partly (ii) a borrowing from German. Etymons: French dulcine; German Dulcin.
Etymology: In sense 1 < French dulcine (V. A. Jacquelain 1850, in Compt. rend. hebd. de l'Acad. des Sci. 31 625) < classical Latin dulcis sweet (see dulce adj.) + French -ine -ine suffix5; compare -in suffix1. In sense 2 < German Dulcin (1893 or earlier; attributed to A. Kossel) < classical Latin dulcis sweet + German -in -in suffix1.With the form dulcine compare -ine suffix5.
Chemistry.
1. A sweet-tasting crystalline alcohol which occurs in various plants; = dulcitol n. Obsolete.
