Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish dulce de leche.
Etymology: < American Spanish dulce de leche (1884; originally and chiefly in Argentina) < dulce sweet (see dulce n.2) + de of ( < classical Latin de de prep.) + leche milk (13th cent.; < classical Latin lact- , lac : see lacto- comb. form).
Originally in South American (esp. Argentinian) cuisine: sweet, caramelized milk, often served as a spread or sauce.
