Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: dulcamara n., -ine suffix⁵.

Etymology: Originally < dulcamara n. + -ine suffix⁵, after French dulcamarine (1826 or earlier; attributed to E. Desfosses, who however appears to have called the substance dulcarine (1821)). The β. forms show remodelling of the ending after -in suffix¹.Compare German Dulcamarin (1829 or earlier; < French).
