Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Urdu. Partly a borrowing from Persian. Etymons: Urdu daftar; Persian daftar.
Etymology: < (i) Urdu daftar collection of documents tied together in a cloth, record, list, also record office, archive, business office, and its etymon (ii) Persian daftar register, account book, collection of documents tied together, office (Middle Persian (late) daftar register, account book), ultimately < ancient Greek διϕθέρα skin, hide (also as writing material) (see diphtheritis n.), probably via Arabic daftar writing book, account, register (also diftar ). With sense 2 compare Urdu daftar ḵāna and its etymon Persian daftar ḵāna record office, counting house, lit. ‘record house’ (compare quot. c1757 at sense 2).
South Asian. Now chiefly historical.
