单词 drook
释义

drookv.

Brit. /druːk/, U.S. /druk/, Scottish English /druk/, Irish English /druːk/
Forms: Scottish pre-1700 1700s drowk, pre-1700 1700s– drouk, 1700s– drook; Irish English (northern) 1800s– dhrook, 1800s– drouk, 1900s druke, 1900s– drook; English regional (northern) 1800s drook, 1800s drouk.
Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a variant or alteration of another lexical item.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps < druck- (in drucken , Scots past participle of drink v.1; compare similar forms of drunken adj.), with irregular lengthening of the stem vowel (perhaps influenced by the stem vowel of drown v.); compare also earlier drunk v., drunken v.1, and (cognate with the latter) Old Icelandic drukna to be drowned. Compare also earlier drawk v. and forms at that entry.
Scottish, Irish English (northern), and English regional (northern).
transitive. To drench or soak (a person or thing). Frequently in passive. Also occasionally intransitive. Cf. drawk v.
