Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name American Express.
Etymology: < the name of the American Express Co., provider of the credit and charge cards.The company was founded in 1850 in Buffalo, New York, to provide express transport services, initially in New York State, and later on a national level. The company introduced a scheme of international traveller's cheques in 1891 (compare quot. 1891 for traveller's cheque n. at traveller n. Compounds 2) and launched its charge card services on 1 October 1958.
