Origin: Apparently a borrowing from French. Etymon: French abaisser.
Etymology: Apparently < French abaisser (in painting) to tone down the intensity of a colour by using black alongside (1839 or earlier), specific use of abaisser to reduce in intensity (see abase v.).Similar use as noun is apparently not recorded in French.
A soft black pigment; ivory black, bone black.Recorded chiefly in dictionaries.
