Etymology: < post-classical Latin amentifer of or relating to winter buds (1552 or earlier), bearing catkins (1690 or earlier; < classical Latin āmentum in its post-classical Latin sense ‘catkin’ (see amentum n.) + -fer -fer comb. form; originally after Hellenistic Greek καχρυϕόρος) + -ous suffix.Compare French amentifère (1813 or earlier).
