Forms:

α. Middle English–1600s Abbadon, Middle English–1600s Abadon, 1500s– Abaddon.

Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Partly a borrowing from Hebrew. Etymons: Latin Abaddon; Greek Ἀβαδδών; Hebrew 'āḇaddōn.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Abaddon (Vulgate: Revelation 9:11), a name of the ‘angel of the bottomless pit’ < Hellenistic Greek Ἀβαδδών (New Testament: Revelation 9:11; compare Hellenistic Greek Ἀπολλύων Apollyon n.) < Hebrew 'āḇaddōn place of ruin, place of destruction, abyss (used in Job, Proverbs, and the Psalms as a poetic synonym of šĕ'ōl Sheol n.; in Job 28:22, personified) < 'āḇaḏ to perish. In quots. 1526, 1611 at sense 1 directly < Hellenistic Greek Ἀβαδδών. In sense 2 directly < Hebrew 'āḇaddōn. Compare Apollyon n.The β. forms probably show prefixation of the French definite article le.
