Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French amene; Latin amoenus.
Etymology: < (i) Middle French amene (French amène ) pleasant, agreeable (early 15th cent.), or its etymon (ii) classical Latin amoenus attractive, charming, pleasant, agreeable, related to amāre to love (see amant n.).Compare Italian ameno (a1294). N.E.D. (1884) gives the pronunciation as (ămī·n) /əˈmiːn/.
Obsolete.
Pleasant, agreeable. In early use esp. of weather or landscape.
