Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French douroucouli.
Etymology: < French douroucouli (A. v. Humboldt 1810, in a fascicle for A. von Humboldt & A. Bonpland Recueil d'Observations Zoologie & d'Anatomie Comparée I. (1811) 306), apparently < a South American Indian language of the Orinoco region.The name is attributed by Humboldt to the language of the Marabitana people, who are now extinct and have not been clearly identified; they are reported to have been part of a confederacy with Arawak-speaking peoples.
Any of the nocturnal monkeys comprising the genus Aotus, which are native to tropical South and Central America and have large eyes, black and white facial markings, and long, non-prehensile tails. More fully douroucouli monkey.Also called night monkey, owl monkey.
