单词 dought
释义

doughtn.

Forms: 1700s dought, 1800s douch, 1800s dught.
Origin: Formed within English, by back-formation. Etymon: doughty adj.
Etymology: Back-formation < doughty adj., by analogy with e.g. might n.1 vs. mighty adj. Compare earlier douth n., doughtihead n., doughtiness n. Compare also earlier dought adj.The following example has sometimes been interpreted as showing earlier currency (in sense ‘prowess’):a1500 (?c1450) Merlin xxvii. 555 Yef thei knewe the dought of my brother Agravain [Fr. le penser Agrauain mon frere].However, it is more likely that dought shows either an error for thought n. (compare the French original) or a variant of doubt n.1 (compare sense 3b at that entry).
Scottish. Obsolete.
Power, strength.
