Etymology: < post-classical Latin Amalec, Amalech (Vulgate), and (in later use) its etymon Hebrew ʿAmālēq, the name of a patriarch in the Old Testament and Hebrew Scriptures, the grandson of Esau (Genesis 36:12), and also of a tribe believed to be descended from him. On the basis of Exodus 17:13, Amalek has also been understood to be the name of a king or leader, sometimes conflated with the ancestral Amalek. As a result, in some contexts it is difficult to distinguish whether the reference is to the people, the ancestral figure, or the king, particularly in sources that allude to the attack on the Israelites in the desert described in Exodus 17:8–16.
