Origin: A borrowing from Arabic. Etymon: Arabic 'ML.
Etymology: < Arabic 'ML (1975; read as amal ), acronym < the initial letters of afwāj al-muqāwama al-Lubnāniyya , literally ‘Lebanese Resistance Detachments’, the official name of the organization, punningly after amal hope (compare Ḥarakat al-Amal , literally ‘Movement of Hope’, an alternative name of the organization). Compare Fatah n., Hamas n., which likewise reflect Arabic acronyms.The name of the organization was coined on 6 July 1975 by the Imām Mūsā al-Ṣadr (compare quot. 1976).
A Shiite Muslim political and paramilitary organization founded in Lebanon by Imām Mūsā al-Ṣadr in 1975. Also as a modifier.
