Forms: 1800s– amakosi, 1900s– amakhosi.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Xhosa. Partly a borrowing from Zulu. Etymons: Xhosa amakhosi, Zulu amakhosi.
Etymology: < (i) Xhosa amakhosi, and (ii) the related Zulu amakhosi < ama- , plural class prefix + -khosi king, chief, ancestral spirit, supernatural being, also used as a title of respect for high-ranking persons (singular inkosi : see inkosi n.).
South African.
With plural agreement. In traditional Nguni societies: tribal leaders or chiefs, regarded collectively. Cf. inkosi n.
