Origin: A borrowing from French. Perhaps also partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: French amaistrier ; a- prefix2, English maister , master v.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman amestrier , amestrer and Middle French amaistrier, amaistrer (compare Old French amaistroier ) to get mastery over, subdue (13th cent. in Anglo-Norman in a passage corresponding to quot. a1250 at sense 1), to teach, instruct (15th cent.) < a a- prefix5 + maistrier maistrie v. In sense 2 perhaps independently re-formed < a- prefix2 + maister, regional variant of master v.
Obsolete.

1841 C. H. Hartshorne Salopia Antiqua 304 I'll amaister it to you I insert this word on the single authority of a man from the neighbourhood of Cleobury Mgortimer, who assured me that he had repeatedly heard it in the above sense.
1876 G. F. Jackson Shropshire Word-bk. (at cited word) An old man near Leintwardine, speaking of his schoolmaster, said ‘'E used to amaister me, Sir.’ Now rarely heard.
