Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French amadis.
Etymology: < French amadis type of sleeve (1694) < the name of Amadis de Gaule, the eponymous hero of a late medieval romance of chivalry and hence of the opera Amadis de Gaule by J. B. Lully to a libretto by P. Quinault (premiered in 1694); the type of sleeve was made fashionable when it was worn by the protagonist of the opera in its premiere.With reference to the late medieval romance compare e.g. Middle French, French †amadiser to speak like the characters in the romance of Amadis, †amadisé pretentious, affected (both 16th cent., rare), and also the following expression (already in Middle French: 1583):1611 R. Cotgrave Dict. French & Eng. Tongues s.v. Amadis Pinsegreneur d'Amadis, a neat, spruce, affecting speaker.
1. A close-fitting sleeve buttoned at the wrist, or (later) from the wrist to the elbow; more fully Amadis sleeve. Now historical.In quot. 1814: a wristband worn with a sleeve.
