单词 dragooner
释义

dragoonern.

Forms: Also 1600s dragonier, dragoner, dragoneer, dragooneer.
Etymology: < dragoon n. 1, or immediately < French. Compare German dragoner, in 17th cent. also tragoner, draguner. In German, the word was already in regular use in the Thirty Years War, and in 1617 was ridiculed as a ‘fremdwort’ or foreign word (Kluge). This, with the variant 17th cent. English forms, and the fact that it was not a natural English formation < dragoon, imply for the original a French dragonnier ‘soldier armed with a dragoon or harquebus’, although this is not recorded in the dictionaries. Old French had dragonier in the sense ‘standard-bearer’, = medieval Latin dracōnārius.
Obsolete.
