Etymology: < French dragonnade (18th cent.), < dragon dragoon n.: see -ade suffix.
In plural a series of persecutions directed by Louis XIV against French Protestants, in which dragoons were quartered upon the persecuted. Hence, any persecution carried on with the help of troops. (Rare in singular.)
