Etymology: < German -chromasie (see -chromasia comb. form; also late 19th cent. with reference to colour vision, in Dichromasie dichromacy n. Trichromasie trichromasy n.); compare -y suffix³. With sense 1 compare earlier formations in -chromasia comb. form.Occasional formations in both senses (apparently always after German models) are found from at least the beginning of the 20th cent. With the form -chromacy compare -acy suffix (in e.g. acritochromacy n.).
