Etymology: < post-classical Latin abacinat-, past participial stem (see -ate suffix3) of abacinare (14th cent.) < Italian abbacinare , †abacinare (13th cent.; < Italian ab- ab- prefix + bacino basin n., with reference to the hot metal plates used for the purpose). Compare abacination n.

transitive. To blind by placing red-hot irons or reflective metal plates in front of the eyes. Also in extended use.
