Etymology: < Anglo-Norman dowarie (feminine) = Old French douaire (masculine), dower, dowry: compare medieval Latin doāria (feminine) (1273 in Du Cange), beside doārium , dōdārium , dōtārium , neuter: see dower n.1 The Scottish forms seem to have arisen from a confusion of dowery (dowry n.) with drowrie (druery n. 2).
