allowableadj.n.

Brit. /əˈlaʊəbl/, U.S. /əˈlaʊəbəl/
Forms: Middle English allowabill, Middle English alowabyll, Middle English–1500s alloweable, Middle English–1600s alowable, Middle English– allowable, 1500s aloweable; Scottish pre-1700 allowabill, pre-1700 1700s– allowable.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French allouable.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman alouable, alowable, allowable, Anglo-Norman and Middle French allouable (French (rare) allouable ) permissible (c1275 or earlier; earlier in Old French (Picardy) in an isolated attestation of uncertain date, perhaps 13th cent. in sense ‘acceptable, legitimate’), legally admissible (end of the 13th cent. or earlier; in later use in late Middle French and modern French only in the specific sense ‘(of an item) that can be entered in an account’ (1586)) < alouer , allouer , aluer , etc. allow v. + -able -able suffix. Compare post-classical Latin allocabilis legitimate, admissible, (in accounts) to be credited (from late 13th cent. in British sources). Compare lowable adj.
