Origin: Apparently formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: dot n.1, -le suffix.
Etymology: Apparently < dot n.1 + -le suffix.With sense 1a compare earlier dossil n. With sense 2 compare post-classical Latin dotella (14th cent. in the source translated in quot. ?a1450), which may itself show a borrowing < English (and hence may suggest even earlier currency of the English word). Perhaps compare also earlier dit v.
