Etymology: < French dorée ‘the Doree, or Saint Peters fish; also (though not so properly) the Goldfish or Goldenie’ (Cotgrave); in origin, feminine past participle of dorer to gild.
A fish, Zeus faber, found in European seas, and much esteemed as food. Also called John Dory n.

β. 1800s–1900s doris (singular, in sense 2).

Origin: Probably a borrowing from Miskito. Etymon: Miskito duri.
Etymology: Probably < Miskito duri (pronounced ['doɾi]), denoting a kind of small boat.In β. forms after French doris (singular and plural, with silent -s), denoting the North American craft (1847, itself apparently < the plural of the English word).
1. A canoe or small round-bottomed boat, chiefly used in Central America and the Caribbean.In quot. 1709 referring to a boat used to cross creeks in South Carolina.
