Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: dog n.1, stone n.
Etymology: In α. forms < the genitive of dog n.1 + the plural of stone n.; in β. forms < dog n.1 + the plural of stone n.; after either classical Latin cynosorchis (itself after Hellenistic Greek κυνὸς ὄρχις) or post-classical Latin testiculus canis (1551 in Turner, 1578 in Lyte); ultimately so called on account of the shape of the tubers.
Now historical.
Any of various British orchids; (also) the rounded tubers of these plants, formerly used medicinally (rare). Cf. dog's cods n. at dog n.1 Compounds 3c.
