Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: Latin alūmin- , alūmen , -ite suffix¹.

Etymology: < classical Latin alūmin-, alūmen alum n.¹ + -ite suffix¹, after French aluminite ( J. C. Delamétherie Théorie de la terre (ed. 2, 1797) II. 115; perhaps there used in the more general sense ‘mineral containing alum’: compare aluminilite aluminilite n., coined earlier in the same work). Compare German Aluminit (1801).

Mineralogy.

A whitish mineral typically occurring in opaque, clay-like masses and consisting of a hydrated basic sulphate of aluminium. Cf. websterite n.¹Chemical formula: Al₂SO₄(OH)₄·7H₂O. Crystal system: monoclinic.In quot. 1805 perhaps in a less specific sense: cf. discussion in etymology.

1805 S. Weston Werneria I. 90 Wavellite. Hydrate of Argill, or Aluminite. This earth was discovered by Dr. Wavell in the neighbourhood of Barnstaple, and has been analysed by Mr. Davy, who found it to contain 3 parts in 100 alumine, and the rest water, without reckoning what escaped unaccounted for.

1818 Ann. Philos. 12 31 Stromeyer has analyzed the aluminite found some years ago at Newhaven in Sussex, and made..comparative analyses of the aluminite of Halle.

1823 W. Phillips Elem. Introd. Mineral. (ed. 3) 145 Subsulphate of alumine. Aluminite... It was first found, with selenite in calcareous loam, near Halle in Saxony.
