In similative and allusive use: a powerful force which devours or overwhelms everything around it.With reference to the biblical story of Aaron's rod being miraculously transformed into a serpent which devoured serpents conjured from rods by Pharaoh's magicians; see quot. 1611.In quot. 1631 also with reference to the story of the rod blossoming and yielding almonds (see quot. 1611 at sense 2).
