Etymology: < either alum v. + -ed suffix1 or < alum n.1 + -ed suffix2, after classical Latin alūminātus (see aluminated adj.1 and compare quot. ?a1425 and also quot. ?a1425 at alum v.). Compare Catalan alumat (of water) mixed with or containing alum (1523) and the foreign-language forms cited at aluminated adj.1 Compare aluminous adj.
