单词 dreidel
释义

dreideln.

Brit. /ˈdreɪdl/, U.S. /ˈdreɪd(ə)l/
Forms: 1900s– draydel, 1900s– dredle, 1900s– dreidel, 1900s– dreidl, 1900s– dreidle, 1900s– dreydel, 1900s– dreydl.
Origin: A borrowing from Yiddish. Etymon: Yiddish dreydl.
Etymology: < Yiddish dreydl, (rare) dreydel, probably a blend of trendl , an alternative name for this toy (see below), and dreyen to turn ( < Middle High German dræjen to turn: see throw v.1).Yiddish trendl is < Middle High German trendel spinning top (see trendle n.). Compare the following earlier borrowing of this Yiddish word into English:1902 E. J. Ruskay Hearth & Home Ess. 45 On the first night of Chanukkah, each child is presented with a funny little top, called a ‘trendel’, which he may twirl round sharply, and watch as it spins itself out. It is sure to fall with one of its sides uppermost, and as each side bears a raised Hebrew letter, the fun of the game hinges upon which letter the player turns up to view.
1. A small four-sided spinning top, with a Hebrew letter on each face, used in a children's game traditionally played at the Jewish festival of Hanukkah. The gambling game played with the dreidel involves adding to, taking from, or doing nothing to a central pot depending on what letter is face up after the dreidel is spun (cf. teetotum n.1 1a, which has similar rules). It is customary for children to use their Hanukkah gelt (see gelt n.2 Additions) as a stake. The Hebrew letters on the dreidel are nun, gimel, he, and shin (or, in Israel, peh), which are commonly believed to stand for the initial letters of the Hebrew phrase nēs gāḏōl hāyāh šam (or pō) ‘a great miracle happened there (or here)’. This phrase refers to the miracle which is believed to have occurred at the rededication of the Temple (commemorated at Hanukkah): a tiny amount of oil proved sufficient to keep the lamps in the Temple burning for eight consecutive nights.
