Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Aaron , beard n.

Etymology: < the genitive of Aaron (see Aaron n.²) + beard n. Compare earlier old man's beard n. (especially senses 3 and 5 at that entry).Perhaps partly so called with allusion to Psalm 133:2; compare:1611 Bible (King James) Ps. cxxxiii. 2 It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard [Hebrew zĕqan-'ahărōn, L. barbam Aaron]. A post-classical Latin plant name barba aaron is attested earlier denoting the wild arum, Arum maculatum (see aaron n.¹), but this appears to be unrelated to the later uses.

Any of several plants which are thought to resemble a beard in growth, habit, or appearance; esp. (a) the rose of Sharon, Hypericum calcinum, which has prominent tufts of hair-like stamens; (b) either of two ornamental plants which produce long runners, the saxifrage Saxifraga stolonifera (cf. old man's beard n. 5), and the ivy-leaved toadflax, Cymbalaria muralis; (c) a spiraea, Spiraea latifolia, with dense racemes of hairy-looking flowers (now rare).
