单词 dogs tooth
释义

dog's toothn.

Brit. /ˈdɒɡz tuːθ/, U.S. /ˈdɔɡz ˌtuθ/, /ˈdɑɡz ˌtuθ/
Forms:

α. 1500s dogges tooth, 1600s dogs tooth, 1700s– dog's tooth.

β. 1800s– dog tooth.

Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; partly modelled on Latin lexical items, and partly modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: dog n.1, tooth n.
Etymology: In α. forms < the genitive of dog n.1 + tooth n.; in β. forms < dog n.1 + tooth n. In sense 1 after post-classical Latin dens canis (1552 or earlier; compare also post-classical Latin dens caninus : see quot. 1629 at sense 1); apparently so called either on account of its rootstock shaped like a dog's tooth or (perhaps) on account of the teeth on the inner segments of the perianth. In sense 2 originally after Middle French chiendent (1594 in the passage translated in quot. 1600 at sense 2); in later use after scientific Latin Cynodon, genus name (1805). Compare also dog-tooth n.
