Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin alutel, aludel.

Etymology: < post-classical Latin alutel (late 13th cent. in the passage translated in quot. a1400; also aludel, aludellum (14th cent. in a British source)) < Arabic al-'uṯāl < al the + 'uṯāl sublimation vessel (9th cent.), perhaps < an unattested Greek form*αἰθάλιον < αἴθαλος smoky flame, thick smoke ( < αἴθειν to light up, kindle (see aethionema n.) + -αλος, suffix forming nouns) + -ιον, suffix forming nouns. The initial u of the Arabic word is difficult to explain, but perhaps reflects alteration after the homonym 'ūṯāl dignity (also 'āṯāl). Compare Old French alutel, aluthel (both late 13th cent. in Old French), Middle French, French aludel (1545), Spanish aludel (1568; compare earlier aludé, aludá (c1250 in an apparently isolated source)), Italian aludella.

A pear-shaped earthenware or glass pot, open at both ends to enable a series to be fitted one above another, formerly used in sublimation and other chemical processes.
