Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: dog n.1, tail n.1
Etymology: In α. forms < dog n.1 + tail n.1; in β. forms < the genitive of dog n.1 + tail n.1 In sense 1 after scientific Latin Cynosurus, genus name ( Linnaeus Genera Plantarum (1737) 13), ultimately so called on account of the plant's appearance (see below); in sense 2 after classical Latin Cynosūra or its etymon ancient Greek κυνόσουρα (see cynosure n.).
1. More fully dog's-tail grass. A grass of the genus Cynosurus; esp. C. cristatus, having flattened panicles with the flowers pointing in the same direction, so resembling the hairs on a dog's tail. Also with distinguishing word.
