Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: allo- comb. form, -plasty comb. form.
Etymology: < allo- comb. form + -plasty comb. form. In sense 1b after German Alloplastik ( F. Marchand Der Process der Wundheilung (1901) xxvii. 373; already 1837 or earlier in an uncertain sense in a gynaecological context; 1883 in sense 1a, in a review of the source cited in quot. 1883 at sense 1a). Compare French alloplastie surgical transplantation of tissue between individuals (1839 or earlier).
1. Surgery.
a. Grafting of skin from one site on the body to another without the use of a pedicle. Obsolete. rare.
