Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; originally modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: Greek ἀλλοϕανής , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < Byzantine Greek ἀλλοϕανής appearing otherwise ( < ancient Greek ἀλλο- allo- comb. form + -ϕανής -phane comb. form) + -ic suffix, originally (in allophanic acid ) after German Allophansäure (J. Liebig & F. Wöhler 1846, in Ann. der Chemie 59 292, the paper summarized in the source cited in quot. 1847 for allophanic acid n. at sense 1). Compare French allophanique (in acide allophanique: 1846 in various abstracts of the German paper).

1. allophanic acid n. an unstable organic acid, urea-1-carboxylic acid, known chiefly in the form of derivatives such as esters and amides.Formula: NH2CONHCOOH.
