Etymology: < allo- comb. form + -phane comb. form, after German Allophan (F. Stromeyer & J. F. L. Hausmann 1816, in Annalen der Physik 54 120), itself apparently after Byzantine Greek ἀλλοϕανής (see allophanic adj.¹), the mineral being so named on account of its unusual appearance (compare quot. 1817). Compare French allophane (1816 in an abstract of the German coinage paper).In form allophan after the German form.

Mineralogy.

An amorphous clay mineral, typically pale blue, consisting essentially of hydrated aluminium silicate.
