Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French allophanate.
Etymology: < French allophanate (1846 in allophanate de baryte ) < allophan- (in allophanique allophanic adj.1) + -ate -ate suffix1. Compare allophanic adj.1French allophanate de baryte is after German allophansaurer Baryt (J. Liebig & F. Wöhler 1846, in Ann. der Chem. 59 293). Compare German Allophanat (1849 or earlier), which was not used by Liebig and Wöhler in their 1846 paper.
Chemistry.
A salt or ester of allophanic acid.
