Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek ἄρον.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ἄρον arum n., with folk-etymological alteration after the name of Aaron (see Aaron n.2). Compare German aaron (1500 in the source translated in quot. 1527). Compare also post-classical Latin barba aaron wild arum, literally ‘Aaron's beard’ (c1300 or earlier). Compare later arum n.
Now historical and rare.

Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Aaron.
Etymology: < Aaron (post-classical Latin Aaron (Vetus Latina, Vulgate), Hellenistic Greek Ἀαρών (Septuagint, New Testament), Hebrew 'Ahărōn), the name of the first high priest of the Israelites according to biblical tradition.The book of Exodus (6:16-20) states that Aaron was the brother of Moses (compare Moses n.) and a descendant of Levi, the founder of the tribe (compare Levite n.). The name is attested in English contexts from the Old English period onwards (in Old English and Middle English in the forms Aron and Aaron).
Now rare.
A person resembling the Jewish high priest Aaron, esp. a high priest, a leader.
