One of a political party which arose in France soon after 1815, ‘having for their object and doctrine the establishment and preservation of constitutional government, and the reconciliation of authority and liberty, royalty and national representation.’ (Townsend Manual of Dates.)They were looked upon by members of the two extreme parties as speculative politicians holding a ‘doctrine’ not within the range of practical politics.
