Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: allo- comb. form, Greek μέτρον.
Etymology: < allo- comb. form + ancient Greek μέτρον measure (see metre n.1).
Biology. Now historical and rare.
In the terminology of H. F. Osborn: a discrete quantitative change in the relative proportions of body parts during the course of evolution.

1911 H. F. Osborn in Science 26 May 826/1 Changes of proportion. This comprehends one of the most important and significant parts of titanothere evolution. Such change it is proposed to designate as ‘allometric’, and new parts originating in this way may be termed ‘allometrons’.
1920 Bull. Amer. Mus. Nat. Hist. 42 661 There are, however, certain differences due to slight differential acceleration or retardation in the allometrons.
1996 M. Ruse Monad to Man vii. 267 Aristogenes may have brought on the nasal horns of the titanotheres, but it was ‘allometrons’ which made them grow bigger or broader or whatever.
